About the Journal

The African Journal for AIDS and Infectious Diseases (AJAID) will serve as a premier platform for advancing knowledge and fostering dialogue on HIV/AIDS in the African context. Its scholarly domain encompasses the multidisciplinary field of HIV/AIDS research and practice, addressing the biological, social, behavioral, and structural dimensions of the epidemic. The journal aims to provide a space for critical inquiry, innovative research, and evidence-based solutions to the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS on the African continent. By capturing the complexity and diversity of HIV/AIDS research in Africa, AJAID will contribute to a nuanced understanding of the epidemic and support efforts toward achieving an AIDS-free generation.

The Society for AIDS in Africa (SAA) was founded in 1989 by a group of African scientists, activists and advocates. The establishment of the Society was the result of advocacy by African scientists, started in 1988, for the ICASA conference to be organised by Africans – a cause supported by the then Director of WHO, Dr. Peter Piot. This movement eventually led to the establishing of SAA, a non-governmental- and not-for-profit organisation. Founding members of the SAA were: Prof. Mboup from Senegal, Prof. Kaptue from Cameroon, Dr. Okware from Uganda, Prof. Soyinka from Nigeria, Prof. Kadio and Prof. Gershey-Damet from Côte d’Ivoire, Dr. Patrick and Dr. B. Owili from Kenya, Dr. Mpele from Congo Brazzaville, Dr. Kalenganyi and Dr. Kapita from DR Congo, Prof. Mhalu from Tanzania, Prof. Luo from Zambia, Prof. Latif from Zimbabwe, Dr. Abdulrahman Sow from Mauritania, Dr. Philip Kanki from the USA, Prof. Benslimane from Morocco, Dr. Mohamoud from Sudan and Prof. Zribi from Zimbabwe.
